~The Poetics of Hip Hop~
Hip hop is a culture, a way of life. It includes many types of expression, including music (rapping), deejaying, dancing, and graffiti. For our purposes in ELA, we will be focused on the writing and performance of hip hop music.
Pulling from examples from across the genre, students will listen to and break down song lyrics to stretch their understanding of figurative language, storytelling, and poetic conventions through a medium that is easily accessible but often challenging. Our analysis will include pairs of rhyming lines, whole verses and entire songs. To cap off our unit, students will try their hand at writing and performing their own unique rhymes to an instrumental of Mr. B's choosing. |
