~Reading~
Throughout the year, students will be exposed to a variety of texts through multiple mediums that they will be challenged to understand and interpret. To do this effectively, it is important that students are able to decode, make connections, and think deeply.
Reading comprehension strategies will be practiced throughout the year and will be used intentionally in individual and group tasks. |
Specifically, students will participate in two Literature Circles and a novel study this year. In addition, response to literature will be practiced in small groups during first term before students branch off individually.
Response Circles
Response circles offer students the opportunity to learn from one another while conducting an in-depth exploration of a text. Students are divided into groups and each assigned a text, independently making observations as they go. After reading, students discuss their observations and practice the skills required for writing a response to literature. Together, they identify a theme(s), make connections, analyze relevant structures and features, and share their overall opinions of the text. Once finished, each group presents their analysis to the rest of the class.
